Hybrid WFR Recertification Course (WRC)
Course Overview:
Refresh and update your Wilderness First Responder skills with our 24-hour Hybrid WFR Recertification Course, designed for experienced WFRs. This course combines self-paced online learning with two full days of hands-on, in-person training, ensuring you stay current with the latest Wilderness Medical Society Clinical Practice Guidelines and industry standards.
Format:
8 hours online
16 hrs in-person (2 days)
Certifications Gained:
Wilderness First Responder (3 year certification)
Wilderness CPR (3 year certification)
Wilderness Anaphylaxis Training (2 year certification)
Continuing Education:
Graduating students will gain access to Desert Mountain Medicine’s online, continuing education portal so they are continually provided the most up-to date standards & protocols for wilderness medicine.
Students will also gain eligibility to attend in-person, scenario practice sessions hosted by Backcountry Ready, allowing them to keep their practical skills fresh throughout the duration of their certification.
CE Hours:
NREMT CE Hours: All WRC courses are eligible for up to 18 EMT continuing education hours with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and the Colorado state EMS office. Review WRC CEU Itemized List for a breakdown of available hours, and reach out to learn more about EMS continuing education with DMM.
CAPCE CE Hours: Open enrollment WRC courses are eligible for up to 24 CAPCE continuing education hours. Contact DMM for course more information.
Course Highlights:
Hybrid Format: 8 hours of online instruction via CANVAS® + 2 days of in-person skill stations, simulations, and scenarios.
Active Learning: Apply new research and techniques through practical drills and discussions.
Certification Recognition: Meets Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WMEC) standards for recertification reciprocity and employer recognition.
Perfect for self-motivated learners with access to a computer or tablet and high-speed internet, this course ensures you’re ready to handle real-world wilderness emergencies with confidence.
Prerequisites: Current WFR certification from a WMEC member school or one that adheres to the WMEC certification standards:
Meet minimum total course hours:
WFR – 70 hours
WFR-R – 16 hours
Meet minimum in-person hours for Hybrid course formats:
WFR – 45 hours
WFR-R – 16 hours
Devote 50% of in-person hours to hands-on simulations
Teach all WFR Core topics and Skills
Add supplemental hours when including Elective topics and Skills

Continuing Education with Backcountry Ready

Your education shouldn’t stop at the end of your course.
That’s why Backcountry Ready & Desert Mountain Medicine provide 2 types of Continuing Education opportunities for our students.
Online:
All students who graduate with a WFR or WFA certification automatically gain access to Desert Mountain Medicine’s online continuing education dashboard.
This dashboard consists of case studies, curriculum updates, articles, videos, and even live webinars with outdoor professionals to ensure each student has access to the most up-to date wilderness medicine information out there.
In-Person:
In addition to online materials, all students with a valid certification through Desert Mountain Medicine (this includes affiliates such as Utah State University & Backcountry Ready), are eligible to participate in scenario practice sessions hosted by Backcountry Ready. These sessions are comprised of environmental, medical, and trauma related scenarios similar to the scenarios practiced during course.
If you have a group of 6+ friends, we can host a custom session with scenarios tailored to a specific season or activity of your choice. Your confidence in the backcountry is our top priority, and we’re here to support you anyway we can.
