Hybrid Wilderness First Responder Recertification (WRC)

The Hybrid Wilderness First Responder Recertification (WRC) offers a flexible blend of online and in-person learning designed for experienced WFRs ready to refresh and update their skills. This 32-hour course aligns with the latest Wilderness Medical Society Clinical Practice Guidelines and Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WMEC) certification standards.

Through hands-on skill stations, real-world scenarios, simulations, and group discussions, participants confidently apply current best practices in wilderness medicine for remote environments where professional help may be delayed.

Dates: April 30 - May 2, 2026
Time: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily (with breaks)

Location: Salt Lake City, UT 84109

Course Length: 3 days in-person (24 hours) + 8 hours online

Course Format

• 8 hours self-paced online coursework

  • Hosted on CANVAS®, featuring readings, videos, case studies, quizzes, and a midterm exam

  • Students progress at their own pace with instructor support

  • Online access typically opens ~2 weeks before the in-person portion begins

  • All online material must be completed by the start of class on April 30th

• 24 hours in-person instruction (3 days)

  • Hands-on skill stations, scenarios, simulations, and group discussions

  • Builds on online learning to refresh skills and reinforce best practices in wilderness medicine

Certifications Earned

Upon successful completion, participants receive:

• Wilderness First Responder (WFR) – 3-year certification

• CPR/AED – 3-year certification

• Wilderness Anaphylaxis Training (WAT) – 2-year certification

Courses following WMEC standards support recertification reciprocity and broad recognition within the outdoor and EMS communities.

Prerequisites

Participants must hold a current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. Students are required to provide certification information during registration.

• This course is a dedicated WFR Recertification for WMEC and non-WMEC compliant courses. Online-only courses are not eligible for recertification.

Continuing Education & College Credit

• Eligible for up to 18 EMT continuing education hours with the NREMT and the Colorado state EMS office

• Optional college credit available through University of Colorado Denver

Policies

Cancellation: Students must cancel at least one week prior to the course start date to receive a refund.

Illness: Due to the hands-on nature of training, if you are feeling ill within 24–48 hours of the course start, please reach out to Becky to discuss symptoms and options for transferring to a future course (hosted by either Backcountry Ready Outdoor Education or Desert Mountain Medicine).

What to Expect

This course emphasizes hands-on practice and real-world scenarios, reviewing core assessment frameworks, trauma and medical scenarios, and updates in wilderness medicine guidelines.

By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to confidently respond to medical emergencies in remote environments, manage patient care when evacuation may be delayed, and maintain skills needed for professional and recreational settings.
